EAST BRADFORD — The West Chester Fire Department responded on Thursday evening to an out of the ordinary call.
A dog owner reported her 2 1/2-year-old Jack Russell mix had broken free from her chasing a groundhog under some old concrete slabs in a wooded area in the 600 block of Tower Lane in East Bradford Township.
“Miss Chloe” had herself wedged under the concrete slabs pretty good when volunteers of the WCFD arrived said Dave March, Public Information Officer with West Chester’s Police and Fire Departments.
Crews spent a little over an hour and a half digging and carefully shifting concrete to gain access to the trapped dog.
“Slow and steady is how our volunteers moved the concrete out of the way,” March said. “Safety for the dog and our crews was the top priority.”
Soon after parts of the concert were moved and dirt was shoveled away, WCFD Fire Chief Steve Pelna was able to grab Chloe and pull her out.
Chloe appeared to be dirty with a few scratches but otherwise unharmed. Unfortunately the same can not be said for the groundhog.
WCFD was assisted by Good Fellowship Ambulance and the West Chester Police Department.
