Has COVID-19 impacted college football finances? Our 5 biggest findings from our coaches compensation database
SportsPulse: COVID-19 has wreaked havoc on much of the U.S. economy. How has it impacted college football coaches? According to our annual coaches compensation database, head coaches at Power Five conferences haven’t taken a big hit.
Penn State’s rebuilt defense should find itself in good time.
They’re breaking in new linebackers and pass rushers. They’re relying on first-time starters up front. And there’s still a lot to prove in the secondary.
While the talent and depth are there, it may be a lot to ask of a group that hasn’t tackled an opponent in 10 months to fire sharp and straight out of the chute on Saturday — especially against the firepower they’ll face.
The Nittany Lions stand to give up points, maybe even more than most are comfortable with.
So it will be up to their ability to control the tempo and flow on offense, to eventually wear down the Hoosiers with the kind of power they’ve talked about but haven’t truly possessed until now:
A punishing, clock-chewing running game from beginning to end — even without starter Journey Brown.
This is what should bring a calming force to the wild, back-and-forth air show that may attempt to break out in Memorial Stadium in the late-afternoon chill.
For all of the uncertainty surrounding the Lions’ defense and passing game …
For all of the concern over Indiana electric quarterback Michael Penix and his fully equipped support staff …
Penn State should be able to control the outcome based on its ability to exert its will at the point of attack. That means by throwing a mix of darts and hammers at the IU defense through their collection of running backs and an imposing offensive line.
No matter that sophomore tailback Noah Cain will now lead the charge in place of Brown, who is out with an undisclosed medical condition.
This long-awaited opening will be imperative to help dictate an identity, and this running game with multiple options should be its calling card going forward.
It should at least stabilize a possible tenuous situation in Bloomington.
And provide some confidence heading into this short season’s dynamic test the very next week.
Bodani’s pick: Penn State 38, Indiana 30
