Slate is Exchange Club student
Rebecca Slate of North Star High School was the Somerset Exchange Club student of the month.
She is the daughter of Crystal and David Slate from Boswell. Slate is enrolled in honors
and AP courses. She participates in multiple activities including quiz team, student council and musical. Slate has been drum major for the marching band for years. She has cheered for 11 years and is captain of the cheer squad. Slate has also held the co-captain position in forensics which she has made it to nationals twice.
Slate is a graduate of Camp Cadet of Somerset County, as well as an Outstanding Young Woman finalist. She is a member of Christian Community Church.
Slate is also a state certified EMT and a junior firefighter for Boswell Volunteer Fire Department.
She plans to attend Saint Vincent College to major in biochemistry while completing premed courses. She will then complete medical school at West Virginia University to become an emergency room doctor.
Emerick is Lions senior
Julia Faith Emerick, Somerset, is the Somerset Lions Club student of the month for October. She is the daughter of Jennifer and Jeremy Emerick, and a senior college prep/honors program student at Somerset Area High School.
She is a member of the French National Honor Society.
Emerick is a four-year member of the Intensity Outlawz travel fast-pitch softball team. She attends Bethany United Methodist Church and volunteers with Somerset Mobile Food Bank.
Emerick hopes to obtain her Master’s degree in psychology with a minor in pediatric well-being.
She enjoys playing softball, enhancing her education, volunteering within her community, student mentoring, creative writing and traveling.
Musical T-shirts fundraiser
Meyersdale Area High School is putting in a second order for commemorative T-shirts to celebrate 40 years (1981-2021) of musicals. There are short/long sleeved, hoodies and sweatshirts. Orders should be placed by Oct. 29. “Into the Woods,” the 40th musical, will be presented at 7 p.m. Nov. 18-19, and at 2 p.m. Nov. 20. All proceeds help the Meyersdale Drama/Musical Boosters present musicals every year.
