A Lebanon fugitive convicted of child rape in 2020 was shot and killed Tuesday by law enforcement in Tioga County, according to officials.
Robert Uhler, 56, was killed by multiple gunshot wounds to the chest by an FBI agent, Tioga County Coroner James Daughtery said on Thursday.
Uhler had been missing since September 2020, after being charged with multiple counts of raping a child, aggravated indecent assault of child and other related charges.
The U.S. Marshals Service Task Force said the shooting in Gaines Township on Tuesday involved a suspect who was wanted on a warrant stemming from his failure to appear for trial on charges of statutory rape against a victim under the age of 13.
The shooting happened before 11 a.m. in Westfield, Pa.
U.S. Marshals did not identify Uhler in a news release Tuesday, saying the agency was still notifying the suspect’s next of kin.
The suspect pulled a weapon on a federal task force officer, and an officer fired in response, according to a news release. Officers and EMS immediately rendered aid, but the suspect was declared dead at the scene.
“While the Marshals Service mission is to seek the country’s most wanted, we must never forget that the seeking of fugitives wanted on serious crimes, as in this case, is dangerous work,” U.S. Marshal Martin Pane said in his statement.
Uhler had been missing since his car was found in Quittapahilla Creek on Sept. 11, 2020, just before his case was to go to trial.
Uhler’s charges included five counts of rape of a child, five counts of aggravated indecent assault of a child, five counts of indecent assault of a child younger than 13, and one count each of endangering the welfare of a child and corruption of minors, according to his court records. He was free on $150,000 bail.
The trial went on without Uhler. A jury found him guilty later that month of sexually assaulting a girl for more than six years, starting when she was 5 and ending when she was 11.
In October 2020, the U.S. Marshals Task Force took on the case from the Lebanon County Sheriff’s Office and began looking for the suspect.
Pennsylvania State Police are investigating the incident and had not released any details as of Thursday afternoon.
