JERSEY SHORE — Despite a last inning, two-run push by Jersey Shore, it was not enough as the Bulldogs lost to Montoursville, 8-2. Despite the loss, Jersey Shore coach Mike English saw positives that came out of it.
“Our effort was terrific,” said English. “We just need to stay positive.”
The Bulldogs also have younger, less-experienced players on the roster.
“We have six or seven kids without varsity experience that started today,” said English.
However, playing a team like Montoursville, who over the years have been known as being a dangerous team was beneficial to young athletes’ experience.
“Playing the Montoursvilles of the world,” said English, “that’s a great character setting thing for us.”
Out of the gates, Bulldogs junior pitcher Brandon Laubach struck out all three Montoursville hitters to end a very rapid first half-inning.
“He was on fire from the start,” said English. “We loved everything about it. We stretched him a little longer than we wanted to pitch count wise. If this was mid-season to the end of the season, he was going out there for another 25 pitches. He was that dialed in.”
Laubach allowed only one run through his five innings pitched due to an RBI sacrifice bunt by Cameron Francis. The effort allowed the Bulldogs to be only down 1-0 at the end of the fifth inning.
In the sixth inning, after Laubach’s exit, Montoursville scored six runs to make it a 7-0 game. Nick Reeder started the inning with a double. With a combination of walks and bunts, the bases were loaded with zero outs. An eventual walk by Maddix Dalena brought Nick Reeder home. A.J. Llornte proceeded to line in a double bringing Josh Burger home and a sacrifice bunt by Rocco Pulizzi brought in another run. Then a flyball by Cameron Francis drove in a run. Montoursville continued the scoring spectacle as C.J. Signor drilled a two-run homer.
In the top of the seventh inning, Montoursville scored one more run on a Dalena’s RBI single.
The Bulldogs ended the game on a high note, scoring two runs.
