A woman was removed from the house and pronounced dead, county police said.
A man was still unaccounted for.
Authorities said the home collapsed partially in on itself, and it wasn’t safe yet for crews to go inside. Fire investigators were using a drone to look down inside the home. Heavy machinery was brought in to knock down trees surrounding the structure.
Neighbors said that an older couple lives in the home. They said the man had gotten out, but may have gone back inside to get his wife, according to Tribune-Review news partner WPXI.
“I smelled smoke when I was sleeping but I didn’t think anything of it,” said neighbor Debbie Stanton, noting that some homes have fireplaces.
Her neighbor called and woke her up after seeing the flames and fire trucks.
Homicide detectives and the Allegheny County Fire Marshal are investigating.
