CATASAUQUA, Pa. – A massive fire destroyed a garage and left behind a big mess in Lehigh County.
Flames broke out just before 1 a.m. Thursday in the 200 block of Race Street in Catasauqua.
“I was sitting in my living room watching TV, and I heard a lot of yelling and screaming, and I came out and heard explosions,” said Phillip Beil, who lives nearby.
The fire quickly engulfed the building, which belongs to Star Disposal, said Catasauqua police.
“Arriving officers and fire personnel found a fully-involved building,” said Chief Douglas Kish, Catasauqua police.
Two alarms were struck for additional crews.
“Inside the building was garbage trucks,” Kish said. “It was occupied by Star Disposal, they had their trucks in that building.”
A HAZMAT team was called to clean up gasoline and other fluids. Authorities were concerned about the overflow into the Catasauqua Creek.
Cleanup crews are continuing to work into the day Thursday.
Pennsylvania State Police were also dispatched to the scene to assist.
They will work with Catasauqua fire and police to determine what sparked the fire.
No one was inside the building at the time of the fire, and no one was hurt, officials said.
