A multi-vehicle crash in eastern Berks County closed part of Interstate 78 for at least several hours Wednesday afternoon into evening.
County dispatchers said the 5:24 p.m. crash occurred on the eastbound side at mile-marker 43.5 in Greenwich Township, between the Kutztown/Krumsville and Lynnport/New Smithville exits, but a Fogelsville Fire Company Facebook post said firefighters were dispatched to mile-marker 43.8 on the westbound side.
“Reports are 5 tractor trailers involved, one flipped over,” the fire company posted. “Multiple cars and at least 1 entrapment. 1 person trapped and a large full spill. There were at least 8 [patients] transported by EMS. The accident is being investigated by State Police.”
State police said eastbound traffic was diverted at Exit 29 in order to clear the backlog. Traffic was still backed up as of 9:35 p.m., dispatchers said.
