While the pervasive divisiveness in this country leaves very little for Democrats and Republicans to agree upon these days, most Americans can still agree that such partisan division is not healthy for our democracy.
Everywhere you look, seemingly mundane and innocuous topics are becoming targets in the emerging culture war between the left and right. Unfortunately, Americans across the country continue to perpetuate this partisanship by electing ever-more polarizing candidates. Politicians such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who recently sported a “Tax the Rich” dress to the Met Gala to score political points and is known for her unabashed support of even the most extremist progressive policies, come to mind.
While other proposals exist to reduce the toxicity of our political discourse, it would be prudent to start now by electing more moderate candidates in this November’s upcoming election.
Closer to home, perhaps we can vote for Democratic incumbent Lamont McClure over his Republican challenger Steve Lynch in the Northampton County executive race.
While you may not agree with McClure on every topic, he is a relative moderate who has campaigned on not raising taxes while protecting our greenspaces. Meanwhile, Lynch’s campaign seems more focused on proving his “patriotism” by intimidating a local school board with “20 strong men” and by promoting lies about the 2020 election and COVID vaccines.
Regardless of political affiliation, it is clear which candidate would reduce the toxicity of our partisan disagreements, and which candidate would only add fuel to the fire.
