A bus full of young church volunteers veered off a highway ramp in Pennsylvania on Sunday afternoon, injuring at least 32 people — six of them critically — when the driver lost control.
The bus carrying members of the Lives Changed By Christ church in Lancaster County went off an exit ramp on Interstate 81 in Schuykill County about 2:30 p.m., according to a crash report from the Pennsylvania State Police cited by CNN.
“At the end of the ramp you either turn left or right on Route 25, and the bus went across the center guide rail and straight across,” Trooper David Beohm told the network.
LCBC officials told WNEP that the passengers were headed back from the Manheim campus after a student ministry fall retreat.
Three buses were sent to the retreat, and the one that crashed had freshmen and sophomore girls, according to ABC 27.
“When something like this happens, it’s people shaking all around the bus. It takes some time to get in and get people out of the situation,” Tremont Fire Chief Brian Eisenacher told WNEP.
“The guys on the bus did a great job. We took out what we had to take out. Everybody was out and on their way to the hospital pretty quickly,” he added.
Some of the victims were flown to hospitals, some were transported by ambulance and parents took the rest. State police said the injuries are of “varying degrees.”
