The Camden County Fire Marshal's Office recently took delivery of two (2) 2008 Ford E350 Super Duty, Reading Low Pro Classic II Fire Investigation Units. The vehicle is powered by an environmental friendly 6.0L power stroke Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel engine and equipped with a full compliment of exterior compartments. These two units are assigned to the Investigation Unit and the first of their kind. The new vehicles were designed to separate the driver from equipment used for Fire Suppression and Investigation. The Camden County Fire Marshals Office conducted in depth research and received data from Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms regarding Fire Investigators and the exposure to the hazardous chemicals they encounter. Research shows that conducting fire and explosion scene investigations is inherently dangerous and may cause disabling and debilitating injuries, and chronic illnesses that may surface days, months and years after fire scene investigations are completed. The design of this vehicle limits the exposure to chemicals such as acrolein, acrylonitrile, benzene, formaldehyde, and vinyl chloride, several of which are known or suspected human carcinogens. Accompanied by the new vehicle initiative all of the Fire Marshals are monitored annually through blood and urine analysis for any signs of cancer causing agents.
